Prompt

Apply a Whip Pan effect with strong horizontal motion streaks, elongated highlights, smeared color bands, and directional edge trails. Let the background dissolve into rapid lateral blur while retaining enough recognizable subject detail to anchor the image. Avoid radial blur or vertical dragging. Keep the original subject and composition.

Identify

The image briefly blurs into rapid horizontal traces.

Principle

Rapid camera rotation creates motion blur1.

Example

Some Like It Hot, 1959.

Try it out

Pan2 from a face to its reaction.

Background

A very rapid pan briefly obscures clear forms from the eye. This can create energy, connect spaces, or conceal a cut. The Columbia glossary shows a dance sequence from Some Like It Hot as a learning example. The 1950s refer to this example, not the beginning of the technique. For a convincing transition, the direction of movement, brightness, and starting and ending positions must all align.

Distinction

A whip pan can be a true continuous shot or a seam between two shots. Mere blurring does not prove a hidden cut.

Aftermath

Motion blur can be a connecting element between spaces.
