Prompt

Transform this image into a Miniature Effects shot, recreating its forms as carefully painted scale models photographed to appear life-size. Add subtle plaster, wood, and flocked surface textures, tiny construction seams, convincing directional shadows, and deep focus rather than toy-like blur. Keep the original subject and composition.

Identify

A model world appears life-size.

Principle

Small structures are filmed with a suitable camera, lighting, and speed1.

Example

Metropolis, 1927; The Lord of the Rings, 2001–2003.

Try it out

Film a model at the eye level2 of its characters.

Background

Model trickery belongs to the practical prehistory of digital worlds. Film crews build miniature versions of architecture, vehicles, or landscapes and combine the footage with live action. Wētā Workshop documented miniatures as part of its work on The Lord of the Rings. Such models provide real materials and real light; the difficult task is to reconcile all size cues with the claimed scale.

Distinction

Water, fire, gravity, and insufficient depth of field can reveal the scale. A model doesn't automatically appear large just because the camera is close.

Aftermath

The model trick reduces the size of the set; conversely, the tilt-shift look makes reality appear like a model.

What camera height makes a model city appear particularly large?

Show possible answer +
