Generative Outpainting
Generative outpainting / image extension. August 31, 2022: DALL·E-Outpainting as a public product milestone

Prompt
Apply Generative Outpainting by extending the canvas modestly on every side, continuing the existing environment beyond its borders. Match perspective lines, material textures, color balance, grain, and lighting seamlessly; avoid mirrored repetitions or new focal subjects. Keep the original subject and composition intact within the expanded canvas.
Identify
A new visual world is growing beyond the original boundaries.
Principle
A model continues motifs1, light and style into additionally released image space.
Example
DALL·E: extended Vermeer composition, 2022.
Try it out
Expand a square into a panorama2; mark the original section.
Background
Outpainting extends an image area beyond its original boundaries. It is closely related to inpainting: a model fills in new areas while existing parts of the image serve as context. The difference lies in the task and the location of the augmented area. OpenAI publicly demonstrated a corresponding DALL·E function on August 31, 2022, including an extension of Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring. This example represents a product milestone, not the invention of every form of automatic image space extension. In the exercise, you will mark the actual original image area. Compare how the story changes when the same character appears once in a confined space and once in a more expansive one.
Distinction
The extension depicts a fictional setting; it does not document what existed outside the original excerpt.
Aftermath
The effect also changes composition and context. Therefore, discerning the boundary between the documented original image and the invented extension is part of conscious reading.

Question
What distinguishes outpainting from simply enlarging an image?
Show possible answer +Hide answer −
Scaling distributes existing image information across more pixels; outpainting creates additional content outside the existing frame.
