Prompt

Apply a Duotone effect using deep indigo for shadows and vivid coral for highlights, with intermediate tones formed only by blends of these two inks. Preserve tonal separation, crisp silhouettes, and fine surface detail, adding subtle matte print grain without introducing additional hues. Keep the original subject and composition.

Identify

Two dominant colors instead of natural hues.

Principle

Brightness levels1 retain shadow and light colors; true duotone2 prints two separate colors.

Example

Spotify: Year in Music, 2015.

Try it out

Transfer a portrait into three different color pairs.

Background

The term originates from printing: Two printing inks expand or shape the tonal range of a grayscale image. Each color can have its own tone curve and printing plate. The digital revival is anchored here with Spotify's Year in Music 2015; the participating Stink Studios documented gradients and duotone shaders for this purpose. This is a documented application example, not a date of invention. A modern browser filter, on the other hand, usually distributes RGB colors across brightness. This makes the image appear two-tone, but technically it often contains many mixed color tones. Therefore, check before printing whether two separate separations have actually been created.

Distinction

RGB two-color look and printable duotone are different production methods.

Aftermath

Recognizable image families are created through fixed color pairs. The subject and its light distribution continue to determine the contrast.

Question

Why are two visible primary colors not sufficient proof of two printing plates?

Show possible answer +

An RGB filter can interpolate between two colors without creating special color channels or print separations.
