Prompt

Apply an animatronics practical-effects treatment, rendering the subject as a tangible articulated replica with molded silicone skin, painted foam-latex textures, discreet panel seams, and joint divisions. Add glossy inset details, subtle mechanical fittings, and convincing contact shadows under cinematic set lighting. Keep the original subject and composition.

Identify

Physical creatures or figures move through articulated joints1, with blinking eyes, turning heads, or opening jaws. Their solid bodies cast real shadows and interact with water, props, and performers.

Principle

Hidden mechanisms use motors, cables, or fluid pressure2 to move a constructed figure beneath its outer skin. Operators or programmed controls coordinate the movements during filming or live display.

Example

Steven Spielberg: Jaws, 1975.

Try it out

Watch a mechanical shark shot from Jaws without sound; track the jaw movement, water displacement, and shadows.

Background

Animatronics combines puppet construction with controlled machinery to give physical figures lifelike movement. Disney developed Audio-Animatronics3 for attractions before the technique gained particular visibility in 1970s cinema. These figures could synchronize movement with recorded sound. In Jaws, mechanical sharks brought a dangerous animal into the same photographed space as actors and seawater. Flexible coverings concealed rigid frames, while powered mechanisms moved selected body parts. Operators coordinated actions rather than relying on an autonomous robot. The camera recorded an actual moving object, so lighting, splashes, and contact were physical rather than drawn.

Distinction

Unlike stop-motion, animatronics moves a physical figure continuously while the camera records. Unlike computer-generated animation, its visible body exists on set.

Aftermath

Animatronics shows how coordinated mechanical movement and physical interaction can make a constructed body appear alive.

Question

Why does an animatronic creature naturally share the lighting of nearby actors?

Show possible answer +

Its physical body receives the same on-set light and casts actual shadows. Its surfaces also reflect light into the camera.
