Prompt

Apply a Time Displacement effect, depicting different regions of the subject at slightly different implied moments of movement. Introduce sliced offsets, flowing contour distortions, and staggered movement phases across limbs or silhouettes, with transitions following broad tonal bands rather than simple transparent duplicates. Keep the original subject and composition.

Identify

A body appears simultaneously in different phases of movement.

Principle

A brightness map1 selects a different time point for each image region.

Example

Adobe: Time Displacement.

Try it out

Combine a moving image with a vertical gradient2.

Background

A time displacement map determines which point in time of a clip becomes visible at a specific position in the frame. Adobe documented the effect in the 2012 After Effects CS6 manual, describing a neutral gray value as well as negative and positive time offsets. A smooth gradient creates continuous distortions; stepped maps divide the image into time segments. The year 2012 serves as a verifiable documentation reference point, not a purported invention. The similarity to slit scanning aids understanding but does not replace the historical distinction.

Distinction

Unlike spatial displacement scanning, this method shifts the scanning time. It is digitally programmable; a physical slot camera is not required.

Aftermath

Time is treated like a spatially paintable material.

Question

What happens with a monochrome gray time-displacement map?

Show possible answer +

All positions receive the same time offset. A neutral gray leaves the image unchanged in terms of time.
